TRAINING & CERTIFICATION

GUIDE PEOPLE & TEAMS TO BREAKTHROUGH

Discover your unique purpose, get equipped with the Paterson Process, and help people and teams gain clarity and focus.

Through the 6 phases of the training pathway, we address together some essential questions:

Phase 1: Does this align with your Heart and Talents?

Phases 2 & 3: Can you learn this work and serve clients?

Phase 4: Are you ready to commit to this work and steward this process?

Phases 5 & 6: Can you grow and develop as a Guide?

Each phase builds upon the next, and at each phase we determine together if you are ready to move on. Along the way, you will have the chance to learn from Master-level practitioners, work with real clients, and grow in your own leadership. From a financial perspective, each subsequent phase is designed to recoup the investment to that point. For example, as you serve clients in Phase 3, the intent is that you recoup the investment of Phases 1 & 2. Upon completion of the 6 phases, you will become a part of the tribe of Licensed Paterson Guides and you can begin launching and growing your own practice.

In addition to LifePlan and StratOp, we also periodically offer a Church StratOp Certification: a scaled-down training pathway, at a reduced rate, for those in full-time ministry to use StratOp exclusively in that setting. If that’s you, please register your interest by emailing us at support@patersoncenter.com.

The power of a great question

Beyond the first phase of completing your LifePlan, we encourage you to explore our website, watch our Heritage Video, listen to our Podcast, speak with anyone you know who has done this work, speak with your spouse, friends and mentors and ask them to respond to the following:

Knowing what you know of me, I’m considering making a significant investment, over the course of a couple of years, to ultimately equip me to guide individuals/organizations through this socratic process. My role in that is to guide people, through asking great questions, and using a strategic process, to see people get to greater places of clarity, breakthrough, and growth. Does this sound like a good idea for me? Is this a role you see me in? Does this kind of contribution align with your perspective of me? Can you see yourself (or others) investing in my guidance through the Paterson process?

And, perhaps above all, listen to your inner, noble voice. The Paterson Process is built upon perspective before planning, and so we encourage you to get as much clear perspective as you can, and trust that it will point the right way forward for you.

Each phase of the journey is distinct, and you only pay for the phase you’re in. You make the commitment to the next phase only if the clarity you’ve gained in the prior phase speaks to your continuing of the journey. The full program will require approximately two years to complete.  The total financial investment for LifePlan certification is up to $20,000. StratOp certification is up to $26,000.

Phase 1: 2-day LifePlan with one of our team ($5,000 + travel and lodging)

*If you’ve already done your LifePlan, you will be invited to do a 1-day LifePlan Refresh with someone from the Paterson team. ($2,500 + travel and lodging)

Phase 2&3 : Online Training in the Paterson Process ($3,000 for LifePlan, $5,000 for StratOp)

Phase 4: In-person Training in Colorado ($5,000 for LifePlan, $7,000 for StratOp + travel and lodging)

Phase 5 : Coaching and Development ($7,000 for LifePlan, $9,000 for StratOp)

Phase 6 : Ongoing Licensing (Review the Paterson Guide Agreement for details.)

We do not offer payment plans. For Phases 1 through 4, full payment is due before that Phase can start. For Phase 5, payment is made via increased license fees as you work with clients, until that total is reached.

Our pathway, as laid out above, includes a number of elements (particularly within Phases 2, 3, and 5) that you can move through at your own pace. As such, the time taken to get certified is heavily dependent upon your own schedule, how you go about engaging your own clients etc. In addition, the thoughts below may be helpful in thinking through this:

Phase 1: Your LifePlan — The LifePlan itself is a 2-day process. From the time you first reach out to us, to the time you are sitting in Day 1 of your LifePlan, that gap is typically 1-2 months, as we align dates with you.

Phase 2: Your Online Training — If your own LifePlan clarifies and affirms the decision to move forward with our training pathway, you’ll sign your provisional license agreement and begin the online training portion of your training. If you were to go through the online training (Phase 2) from start to finish, without breaks, it would probably take about 20 hours, but of course we don’t recommend moving through in one sitting 🙂 Rather, we typically advise creating consistent time, in blocks of 2 hours or so, to move through the training at a healthy pace. As such, you can move through Phase 2 in perhaps 4-6 weeks.

Phase 3: Serving clients under your provisional license — You are responsible for engaging your own clients (2 clients for StratOp, and 4 clients for LifePlan). You’ll want to begin engaging potential clients in a more intentional way during Phase 2 of the pathway (or sooner). This phase is about helping you to experience guiding clients through the process, bring them great value, and give you further clarity as to whether this work is well aligned with you. Completing Phase 3 is likely to take, at a minimum, 3 months, but again it depends heavily on your own schedule and pace.

Phase 4: The in-person training, hosted in the Denver area of Colorado — Groups are intentionally small, and scheduled on an as-needed basis (with some good lead time to allow you to plan your travel etc.) The training is 3 days for LifePlan and 4 days for StratOp. Presently, our next in-person training is scheduled for mid-November (exact dates to be confirmed). You can apply to attend the in-person training once you’ve completed Phase 2 and are making good progress in Phase 3. At the end of this training, you are fully certified in the Paterson Process (be that LifePlan or StratOp).

Phases 5 and 6 continue on, into the future. As such, the journey from Phase 1 to the end of Phase 4 is about a 6-8 month journey, at a minimum. You may want to plan for more like 12 months. Of course, the pace of the journey is built on the assumption that most Guides moving through our training pathway have other jobs and commitments, which may or may not be the case for you.

In short, no. Our training page lays out the cost of each Phase of the training. When you come under Paterson’s license agreement, you commit to paying Paterson a license fee for each client engagement. This license fee is 15% of revenue or a minimum fee ($499 for StratOp; $299 for LifePlan) per client engagement. The fee covers your license with Paterson and also our transcription of your work onto our online platform (your client then receives their Online Playbook). The only caveat to this is that in Phase 5; we allow you to pay the cost of Phase 5 through increased license fees (50%) until that total is paid off (i.e. you pay-as-you-go for that Phase). You can of course pay in full for Phase 5 if you would prefer that (and we extend a 10% discount if Phase 5 is paid in full upfront).

Your license agreement with Paterson makes clear that when you, as an Independent Guide, serve your own client, that liability does not transfer to Paterson, but stays with you as the Guide. As such, you may choose to purchase General Liability Insurance, or self-insure to appropriate levels. Although we’ve never heard of a case of a client bringing action against a Guide, the decision of whether to purchase insurance, or self-insure, is of course your own. The same answer applies to whether or not you should operate under an LLC. Some Guides, given their situation (and perhaps owing to other work they do, like counseling or consulting) opt to create an LLC and run their Guide work under that umbrella. For others, that approach hasn’t been needed. So again, we don’t provide definitive guidelines with regards to liability insurance or forming an LLC — we’re simply not qualified to offer that kind of legal advice.

In short, no. The responsibility of marketing your own practice, building your own client base, and securing clients, is your own. Our experience is that is takes time (3-5 years) to build a strong business out of this work (to become a significant part of your income) – and in those cases that’s through consistently excellent work, deep and authentic relationship building, and a steady commitment to growth and development. This kind of work grows via word-of-mouth, and word-of-mouth takes time. We don’t share that to scare you away, but rather to set the right expectations. We have many Guides who have dedicated their time and talents to this work, and now 5-6 years in they are doing the work that they love. Therefore, we encourage folks to be thoughtful about what role this work plays in your overall income. If you need it to make up 50% or more of income in Year 1, you may want a different transition plan. Furthermore, we all know that clients never want to be “sold” or marketed to — rather, they want to be listened to, kindly engaged, and to experience you as a thoughtful, curious, and open-handed Guide, with no agenda or demands. Alongside your authentic engagement, Paterson will continue to share the story of the work we do through Podcasts, writing, speaking engagements etc. But we are not the marketing/sales engine for another Guide’s business.

Over the years, we’ve seen every kind of organization helped by the StratOp Process; fledgling non-profits, mega-churches, startups, global enterprises, city governments, school districts, and universities. Of course, the size of the organization can impact their ability to invest in StratOp, and their ability to execute the subsequent strategic plan (we therefore right-size the plan, to fit their goals and capacity). What we’ve found is that the industry or arena an organization works within is not important in determining their fit or readiness for StratOp. Nor is their size and revenues. Rather, what matters most is: do they see their work as about bringing about greater impact and contribution to the world? Do they see their team as whole individuals, worthy of respect and intention? Do they care about more than the numbers and the bottom line? Are they looking to align their team around work that matters and to go after the highest-impact opportunities? Especially early on, this work will flow from your natural networks and connections, that you’ve cultivated over a number of years.

At this stage in the journey, no. And even later in the journey, we can’t answer than definitively one way or the other. We only send out a small number of referrals at this stage, and those referrals are sent to Guides who have been doing this work for 5+ years, have a demonstrated track-record of excellence, and who continue their work in alignment with our values. As we encourage all our Guides: don’t do this work with the expectation of referrals from Paterson, or anyone else.

This might be the most common question we get, and for good reason! It makes sense, right — If I’m going to invest in this work, how will I make any money? Let us encourage you — the time to be exploring and answering this question is before you invest in our training pathway. What we know from experience is that it takes about 3 years to get a sustainable business in this work. Anyone from our group of experienced Guides will tell you there is no big secret to success. This is a relationship business. Your work as a Guide will always begin by serving those in your immediate network. Then, after about 3 years of doing this consistently, word of mouth will pick up (assuming you’re doing good work) and people will start coming to you. That takes about 3 years. And, crucially, it’s word of mouth. Marketing materials and sales techniques haven’t been helpful for us.

Paterson does not commit to sending out referrals.  Rather, we are in the business of releasing each of our Guides to cultivate their own relationships and networks.

Our in-person training dates will be set on our end, and we are unable to promise accommodating individual availability. If you can’t make one training, you’ll be invited to the next training, and so forth. We anticipate one date in late fall 2020 (presently mid-November, 2020), and another in late winter/early spring 2021, or as demand necessitates. We set these with a lengthy lead time to allow for your own planning. We’ll inform you of dates once you’re moving through Phase 2 and readying to enter Phase 3.

We only provide guidelines, as there are many variables involved (eg location, industry, your network etc). For example, if you are planning to serve non-profit organizations or leaders, that is likely to have a different price point than if you’re serving businesses and business leaders. Your rate will also depend upon your associated experience and reputation, and it may be impacted by your own approach with regards to whether this is your main source of revenue or something you do on the side. All that said, we tend to think about serving clients in terms of a simple day-rate, which differs whether we are serving individuals or organizations. We also slide this scale for non-profits/ministries on both ends. As an example, our top Guides may charge $2,500/day for LifePlan ($2K/day for non-profit) and $4,500/day for certain organizations ($3,500 non-profit). Prices are further tailored to a given market. Lastly, if you’re engaging a large StratOp client, and there’s a lot of complexity, your rate may be higher owing to the additional work and preparation required. Overall, in this work, typical day rates for Guides range from $1K-$3K/day for LifePlan, and $2K-$6K/day for StratOp.

In serving clients, you’ll have to consider the cost of meals/snacks/drinks, room space, and chart paper and pens needed to actually do the work. In the case of StratOp, the cost of meals/snacks/drinks are often covered by the client (along with the room space). In the case of LifePlan, most Guides serve clients out of their home (if the space is appropriate). For LifePlan, the additional costs of meals and supplies typically comes to around $250-$300. In the case of StratOp, the additional costs of supplies typically comes to around $100-$150. We provide recommendations and links for which supplies to purchase, as a part of our training.

This is up to you, of course. Experience would teach us that websites have not been effective in generating any kind of business for Guides. Of course, if someone has a great engagement with you, or a reference, they may very well get curious and want to check out your website to learn more. Our encouragement is just to be thoughtful about the time and resources you might dedicate to a website — as of writing, there are 1.7 billion websites (with 200 million active) in the world today, so a website isn’t going to generate business leads the way we might sometimes hope.

As with StratOp, there’s no ideal client. We’ve seen people in all stages of life experience breakthrough and clarity through LifePlan. Are they looking for clarity of their purpose? Are they looking to make their greatest contribution? If they’ve experience great loss and grief (divorce, tragedy, and on), have they taken enough time and received enough support and healing such that they can engage this kind of process in a healthy way?

We’re certainly not the experts on all of these questions, but this is something we’ve considered also. Pete Richardson (our Founder) tells the story of visiting Tom many years back, and Tom could see something was on Pete’s mind. As Tom made tea in the next room, he asked Pete what was going on: “I’m trying to figure out how to scale myself” said Pete. “You can’t!” Tom yelled back, from the other room, “There’s only one of you!” It brought a smile and healthy realization that this kind of work isn’t scalable in terms of time, but it is scalable in terms of quality and experience. You can scale your revenue by getting really good at the work, and being able to charge a premium price. This is how world-class restaurateurs think, or how the best coffee shops thrive. Furthermore, a few Guides have also created some scale by working to open up accounts (whether in LifePlan or StratOp) that are larger than they can serve alone. These situations are rare, but they then bring in other Guides to serve alongside, and develop a simple 1099 relationship in those cases.

No, we do not at this time. However, please note that Phase 5 is “pay-as-you-go” (whereby you only pay for Phase 5 when you are actively serving clients). This represents about 35% of the total investment for the training pathway — in this way, we seek to help Guides spread out the investment and only pay for that portion when client revenue is coming in.
