The Importance of Your Story: An interview with Jen McLain
Many non-profits face the challenge of continual change— in their staff, in their programs, in starting new initiatives and ending old ones. There are things we need to end or say goodbye to and there are things we need to change, advance and mature. All of this can lead to leadership and cultural complexities within an organization. Jen McLain, Executive Director of the Alpha Center in Ft. Collins, Colorado, knows this all too well. The Alpha Center, which provides medical care to those in need of pregnancy tests, education, STD screening and sexual health education, was founded over 30 years ago.
“There is a place for everything in the past. We either learn something from it or change something because of it. If we were to still be doing everything the same as we did in 1985 we would not be a relevant or active organization in our community.” says Jen, who recently went through the StratOp process with her team.
“The thing that sticks out to me about the StratOp process is the importance of gaining the perspective of the past… StratOp allowed this beautiful sifting of information…it gave us clarity,” Jen comments.
Jen’s thoughts on the value of perspective, the non-profit sector and leadership are full of wisdom and experience. To listen to the episode, click one of the links below. And as always, if this show brings value to your world, please consider sharing it with a friend.
